November 2021 Meeting

Meeting Date
  • Access Info
  • Introductions (done in the chat)
  • Agenda
    • Global Mental Health: Agents of Change, U-M Generation Mental Health
      • CfDC member Ashley Wiseman has worked with the conference planners, wants to uplift this event
      • Virtual conference with topics focused on global mental health hosted Friday-Sunday, November 19-21
        • This conference has a focus on lived experience advocates in additional to mental health professionals, so it has less of a medical model of mental health than other conferences
      • Tickets are priced on a sliding scale
    • CfDC Chair transition, Q&A
      • Stephanie Rosen has been CfDC chair since early 2017, transitioning out to allow new leadership to take over
      • New chair will start in January 2022
      • If interested, send your name/nomination to [email protected]
      • CfDC Chair Role - description
        • This is not a fixed role, new chair can change these duties
        • Roles include hosting monthly meetings, supervise admin assistant, steward the CfDC, external communications, oversee annual programming (Disability Community Month, Neubacher Award)
        • Works closely with CfDC admin assistant, CfDC advisory board, finance partners, Matt Snyder
      • Brief history about the chair role
        • Each chair before Stephanie served for about 17 years, and then they each selected a new person to take over that role.
          • Working to change that process so we can have a more sustainable timeline
      • Questions + Discussion
        • How is the chair decided between multiple candidates?
          • If we have many volunteers, we’ll find a way to decide between them (voting? CfDC Advisory group consultation?) - this process is up for discussion
          • If you have thoughts about this, please reach out to the CfDC Advisory group ([email protected]) or to Stephanie and Hannah ([email protected])
          • Other ideas
            • Annual vote or volunteer could make sense
            • Three year - incoming chair, current chair, past chair?
        • Perks of the job?
          • Currently no stipend for the chair, but we do have a budget so it’s a possibility
            • There are campus legal issues with offering money to someone on salary - would need to look into this
          • Used to get free lunch (when we were meeting in person)
        • Could have multiple chairs/division of duties as a way to share responsibilities and to draw on expertise of more people
    • Follow-up on September meeting - Work Connections, Accommodations, Access
      • Followed up with Rebekah Modrak, who presented in September
        • SACUA seems to be in the process of forming a committee to examine WC practices. If you're interested in learning more about this, contact Silke Weineck, the sponsor of that motion. <[email protected]>
          • The late September faculty senate meeting discussed a motion about work connections, Silke was the sponsor of that motion
            • Don’t need to have a faculty appointment to get involved with this
        • The Committee on Oversight of Administrative Action (COAA) that, I believe, is chaired by Tom Braun. And they are also looking into WC. I'm happy to introduce you to Tom if you'd like to speak with that committee. Or you can email him directly at <[email protected]>
          • Tom has agreed to have private conversations with some people about concerns and experiences that will be shared without identifying information
      • Patricia Anderson shared that the COVID-19 Faculty Council is also having a meeting about Work Connections this Friday (Nov 12)
        • Appointed by SACUA, managed by Pres. Schlissel’s office
        • Listening unit that shares information with the president and Provost Collins
        • Work Connections has come up frequently, so this Friday’s meeting is focusing specifically on that
        • Parallels SACUA, and there’s an overlap of membership
          • Tom Braun (email above) is this overlap
    • Toward an Anti-Ableist Academy
      • Website includes recordings for most of the events, final events will be uploaded soon
        • Conference organizers will send an email when those are available
      • Reflections and thoughts?
        • This conference was a collaboration, many CfDC members were involved, but CfDC did not actually contribute as an institution/group
        • The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) was in charge of this, main driving force was highlighting the Student IDEA board recommendations
          • Because that work will be ongoing and the feedback has been positive, this could become an annual thing
        • Some people missed engagement with student panels, disability day of remembrance
          • Can we add that next year? Or can CfDC add those things to October programming?
          • Historically, day of remembrance was organized by DC at UM. Globally celebrated in March
          • Disability Pride event didn’t happen this year, hoping for 2022
        • What structures are going to be workable and sustainable going forward?
    • Other items
      • Is there a way to use CfDC/Neubacher Award as a platform for individuals with concrete ideas to share ways to get involved?
        • Maybe a way to advertise winners’ specific ideas and action steps
