      • Why do we need to provide accommodations:
        • The law
        • It’s the right thing to do
      • Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (sometimes referred to as Obamacare)
        • Included some specific on accommodating patients with disabilities
          • Some rolled back during Trump’s first term and then put back into place under Biden
            • Included hospital requirements like signage
        • Mandatory training for staff was implemented
          • A one time training for patient facing staff that focused on language access
            • Everyone in the health system has to take it.
            • Other training is offered but this is mandatory
          • What is included?
            • Video of Pam Mcguinty talking about the usage of clear masks 
            • Auxiliary aids and services free of charge
            • Includes communication access especially concerning patients with visual loss
            • How to make the clinic more accessible
              • Note takers, interpreters, telephone amplifiers, assistive listening devices, closed captions, braille
          • Part of the Affordable Care Act that prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability 
      • Created a disability tab in MyChart
        • MyChart includes all the basic information about the patient including:
          • Allergies, pronouns, name, demographics
        • Goal of this is so that patients don’t have to constantly ask and advocate.
        • Including a disability section allowed clinics to:
          • know if an interpreter was needed at an appointment
          • Assign larger rooms to patients in wheelchairs
          • Ensure the patient has access to the assistance they need
      • Guide provided by CDHW with resources
      • Questions
        • What should people who don’t identify as disabled do? Like if you need larger text?
          • Ask for larger text. It’s important that hospitals start giving patients access to things like this and some doctors have already started printing in larger text.
        • Do you have any training for providers about body diversity and sizism?
          • No but this is being implemented more and more into medical school.
        • Who do you reach out to talk to if accommodations aren't being provided and things of that nature in the health system?
          • Start with the clinic itself
    • Disability Navigator Program
      • This program is expanding in the fall.
      • The Disability Justice Network and Provost on Disability Affairs is looking for feedback by June 28th
